What it is to become a copywriter: Karishma Puri’s first weeks at Central St Martins

I’m Krish and I’m a copywriter and content strategist for RE-UP. I’m currently attending a creative writing course (Central St Martins) to help me strengthen up my skills in copywriting and content producing by learning about the techniques behind good writing and how to appeal to certain audiences.

I have always had a love for reading and I have written many essays and published some poetry in the past. However I have never really had the chance to produce some of my own creative writing until I joined RE-UP. A copywriter needs to have a good skill-set of being imaginative, understand strategic writing when appealing to specific audiences and the ability to see different points of view. I’ve come to learn that a wide range of vocabulary, extensive research on brands and campaigns and taking on constructive criticism, has aided the way I now write today.

The latest seminar I attended was the most informative and constructive two hours, I’ve ever experienced. It was a workshop on how to gear yourself up for writing. We had to do a writing exercise where we had to write non stop for ten minutes. We weren’t allowed to stop, cross anything out, worry about grammar etc. It was amazing seeing what your brain came out with! It felt fantastic writing and not caring about anything other than your thoughts written down on the paper. After the exercise you felt so motivated and into the swing of things. I found that I was able to write my next piece with more ease and less thought – it felt natural. It was a fantastic exercise that I would really recommend to anyone who is suffering from writer’s block.

I may have only been on my CSM course for two weeks, but I have absorbed so many tips. We’re given weekly assignments to complete, to help strengthen our writing and use what we have been taught from the workshop. Ultimately, these assignments will lead up to one final piece where I will have to write a very well written short story. Who knows what I will write about, but if these seminars carry on being as constructive and as fun as they are, I may be the road to writing my very own book!
