RE-UPdate #20: Guerilla Marketing Tactics in Action

It’s that time of the week again! We’re not just talking about getting down to the pub, though of course, that’s extra-priority with the August Bank Holiday weekend: that’s right, it’s our Friday RE-UPdate!

There’s a slight tinge of sadness as we say goodbye to Jonny and Miguel. However, now Zoe and Krish are back from August holidays, the office is restored to its usual laughter and jubilance. RE-UP is once again aglow – largely because Zoe is normally the only one who turns the lights on.

As per usual we’ve seen lots of progress and it’s been a hubbub of positivity and zen – well, as zen as you can get with our deadlines! In fact, our only response to the deadlines is BRING IT ON. We’ve got so much happening, we can’t resist but take on a new challenge, and give what we’re assigned that extra RE-UP sparkle that makes us such a fab agency. Mwah.

What are we talking about? Well, Firefox OS Africa has been ablaze with the new Firefox OS Africa Challenge, which was launched this week after much anticipation! The teams are all go go go – stay tuned for more Firefox news;, it’s one of our most rapidly developing clients, and we’re looking forwards to seeing what happens next.

Now we’re reaching the end of summer, the jelly sandal season is coming to a close. Does that mean Méduse slows down? Absolutely not! Things are only getting busier with the imminent launch of the huge and brand new Autumn/Winter collection from next week. More exciting still is the approach of the annual #GetJumpy blog contest: we’ve contacted the cream of the crop of the UK and French blogosphere to get involved, so more from that as we get further into Autumn.

Most cool of all in the Méduse world was today’s Spitalfields giveaway. In a guerilla marketing move, and with Nuveen’s gorgeous graphics on social media for a surprise heads-up, the team travelled down to Shoreditch to promote our new collection. In turn, it gave London some new Méduse fans – and some new jelly shoes from previous stock! It was a HUGE success, with dozens of people coming to chat and find out what Méduse is about: the best way to increase UK brand presence.

As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve had lots of progress with the design of a fabulous foodie client’s website and implementing a new editorial strategy; we’ve been engaging with our fave EMEA client to shoot for their new visual identity; and another huge client has had a lot of work based around their editorial calendar in both copy and design. It’s all happening!

Naturally, digital news extends well beyond the walls of our humble office. Our favourite updates include:

  • Instagram has now added the function to be able to post in landscape and portrait! The new functions of the app means that digital marketers will be able to use Instagram as a means of advertising their goods more easily as the new format will be easier to upload clips of their products! It’s been in demand from companies and users for a while now, so it’s an interesting and arguably overdue update to bring Instagram up-to-speed with the consumer world.
  • Facebook are introducing a new ‘Donate Now’ button, in order to boost nonprofits. The new button will sit just next to the ‘like’ button. It will have users’ credit card details registered, meaning when the user sees a charity they like it is easy to donate. This step is one of the first towards Facebook becoming a platform for buying and selling.
  • Amnesty International has produced a clever banner advert that centres around a banner popping up asking if you would like to dissolve the government. A button next to this says “hover here”, and when the user’s cursor does so it becomes trapped in the advert. Then the advert says “In Belarus, you would go to prison for that.” They are trying to get people to learn about freedom on the internet: a simple idea that is very effective.

REturn next week for more RE-UPdate goodness… in the meantime, enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend – let’s hope we all get a good dose of some London sun!
