Heads-UP #1: From Vegan Oreos to Magic Watches

Agency life can be tough. Sometimes we just need five minutes to ourselves where we can scroll through the vast planes on the world wide web and find some, quite frankly, ridiculous information.

This brings us to our brand new feature on the RE-UP blog. Each person on our lovely team has provided one fact they have learnt this week – sometimes work related, sometimes not.

Without further ado, here are 10 things we at RE-UP have learnt this week:

• Robin Hood has a very interesting etymology: It actually refers to Robin, from the word “robe”, meaning magistrate of the “hood” or territory of non-rights. Basically, Robin Hood was the magistrate of the non-rights, or the man who created rights in a territory of non-rights – Laurent

• Cartier bought a patent from the great illusionist Houdini! Together, they created a watch with hands that seem to levitate but don’t seem to be connected to any mechanism. Moreover, it still shows the correct time, having people wonder how it actually works.They have now brought us a new watch on the very same principle – this time the two tourbillons (the mechanism that allows to counteract the effect of gravity and helps the precision of a watch) are both levitating in their central casing…. – Pierre

• Oreo is vegan. – Efrem

• Did you know that Mick Hucknall of Simply Red – once famous for his ever-growing red locks – cut his hair thanks to Martine McCutcheon (Natalie in Love Actually, for those who don’t know) throwing up on his barnet in the back of a car? – Karishma

• This is directly from the wall at the Tate: mock juries are an integral part of litigation consulting, a little-known profession field with annual profits of approximately $3 billion. The estimated cost of a single jury simulation is $60,000. Jurors for simulations are jury-eligible individuals from the jurisdiction where the actual case will be tried. They are recruited to accurately reflect the socia-demographic backgrounds of the jurisdictions population.

• ‘Gander’ means look in Australian slang. Like ‘Do you want to have a gander?’ means ‘do you want to have a look?’ I must admit, I couldn’t understand what the words meant so I googled it for 10 minutes before finding out its real meaning! – Tina… (Comments: After having a goosey gander (see what I did there) into it this is what I found: “take a long look,” slang, 1886, from gander (n.) on the notion of craning one’s neck like a goose; earlier it meant “to wander foolishly” (1680s).)

• The first presidential inauguration to be streamed online was the one for Bill Clinton’s second mandate? – Andrea

• After 3 years of research and development, Alegory Paris received a gold award in 2016 for this innovation. The company created the first ever shoe with a removable heel. The mechanism works thanks to a tongue located inside of the shoe. – Sophie
